While actively protesting the destruction of the native forests in the South West, part of the family solution was to plant trees. While many trees were planted for revegetation purposes we also planted for timber.
In 1992 and 1995 two broad acre timber plantations were established on approximately 40 hectares of the farm. A range of Eucalyptus species were trialed and now that these trees are mature their management has become part of our farm life. With resident arborist Adam Miller from Margaret River Tree services managing the plantations, we have a range of timber products available including fire wood and bush poles.
Spotted gum has been used in both the construction and the cladding of the camp kitchen an ablution block, while timber milled from large fallen trees on the farm have been used to create the furniture in the camp kitchen.
Woodchip from the plantation is our primary source of mulch for the gardens and orchards, keeping the soil covered at all times and sinking carbon back into the soil.
The plantation has also become a food source for the beautiful Karrak( Red Tailed Black Cockatoos ) and in 2024 we placed our first large bird habitat box in the plantation. The plantation is next to our wetland rehabilitation area so careful consideration is put into the management of timber as both human resource and wildlife habitat.
